EMC measurement of plug-and-socket connectors and cables
The EMC characteristics of plug-and-socket connectors can be fully assessed with one single parameter: the coupling inductance.
The coupling inductance describes how strongly external disturbances are coupled to the useful signals on the screening or electronic ground.
The voltage induction caused by the disturbance current's magnetic field is the underlying mechanism of action. This voltage induction is defined by the inductance parameter, which in turn is determined as the coupling inductance based on the plug-and-socket connectors' structural design.
Taking the coupling inductance value in account during structural design along with the pin and wire assignment of the plug-and-socket connector makes it easier to control data transfer systems such as LVDS, FlexRay etc. when these are led via plug-and-socket connectors.
We are able to provide answers to the questions how to estimate the EMC-technical criteria of connectors and cables:
- How is the EMC-quality defined?
- What are the differences between several manufactures and types?
- Which pin or wire assignment is the best for my application?
- How do construct a connector with good EMC-behaviour?
- Which connector or cable is the suited for my technical application?
The coupling inductance is measured with components of the IC measuring system and the ESA1 disturbance emission development system from the Langer EMV-Technik GmbH.
